Stitchworm

So...yesterday, Lil L and I went to Stitchworm. We had planned on going for about an hour....we stayed for three hours... Lil L did so good knitting and purling away and learning new stuff. She had a great time and enjoyed herself a lot. I didn't bring my camera this time so I don't have any photo documentation. :) We got her new needles and some new yarn to work on. I stuck to only getting new needles, a crotchet hook, and a reference book(not exactly the one I want yet but it was cheap and will help for now).

When I showed up and proudly displayed my "homework" scarf, Ricky said it looked great now frog it and let's work on some new stuff... I balked for a second but wanting to stick to a budget and not buy new yarn...I said ok. So, I frogged my "homework" scarf and I learned how to pick up dropped stitches, bind off some more, and how to pick up stitches. I had fun just playing around with my yarn. I'm not really creating anything with it but a mess but having fun doing it. I figured I'd work on different patterns and just create whatever comes to me.

Here's what I got so far.

I also showed her my CAP's Magic Scarf. I think it's looking great. Thursday I cast on and started the pattern and I'm really liking it. I worked on it more this morning after church while Special K was changing his tires.

It's just SO pretty...
Well, I plan on working on these two project for awhile but I've already figured out what kind of pattern I'm going to use for my first dishcloth so I'll show you when I get started. :)

Have a great Sunday afternoon... Special K and I are off to a movie...I'm not at the point where I can knit in movies so...I'll just pay attention to Special K and the movie. :) hehehe

Finished!!! YEAH!!!

Ok...so last night while Special K was playing guitar hero...I finished my "homework" scarf. :) I'm so excited that it's done. I took it with me and showed almost everyone I ran into today. :) I'm crazy remember this. :)

I even took it to another one of my LYS today, Needles and Knobs. She even said for my first knit it looks great. She said the stitches were loose a bit but very even. :) YEAH!!! I was excited. I really liked this LYS, she was really nice and the selection was beautiful..(more on this in a bit)

Ok, you knew this was coming.. :)

Abbs modeling the "homework" scarf...

Jackjack...reluctantly modeling the "homework" scarf...

Ok...so Needles and Knobs....of course I went by to just check it out but started talking to the lady about wanting to start doing some dishcloths after I finish my next scarf. She showed me some pretty yarn that of course she said was on sale and I caved. :) I got two skeins and I needed smaller needles and I was out the door.. :) Isn't it pretty....

So...before I start with the dishcloths I want to do Crazy Aunt Purl's Magic Scarf. I've liked it and figured I'd like to do one more scarf before I move on to other things...socks are not too far off. :) hehehe....one of my secret collection is socks. I've slowed way down and gotten rid of old ones and holey ones...because lets face it I live in florida and in flip flops but LOVE socks. :) So, I'd like to make them.

Tomorrow Lil L and I are heading to Stitchworm to learn some more. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

Stress, Shooting Range

I'm waiting for pictures of the shooting range to post more on that so stay tuned. I did have a great time and was so nervous the first shot then relaxed. :)

Stress....I tend to get very anxious and stressed before change. Don't get me wrong I like change but when it is about to happen...you know that waiting time after you've made a decision and before it comes to fruition....that time...that agonizing in my mind waiting time...where you have tons to do before this so called change but are so overwhelmed that you can't seem to figure out where to start... Yes..this is where I'm at. I've been clenching my jaw at night...making life close to unbearable for my poor, but wonderful boyfriend, and just being a mess. I've been trying to keep it together and keep distracted because hey when we have a problem isn't best to just not think about it... :) I've spent my time babysitting(not that I really had a choice), working at school, reading blogs, and knitting. Last night the egg cracked....I lost it and couldn't quite figure out how to not drag Special K down with me. I feel horrible about this but I just was so...lets say freaking out that I just lost it.(Special K is safe and well by the way)

I've since gained back control...started thinking about what is bothering me...made lists...and started cleaning. Cleaning is the first step to getting my mind back in order. It's a cleansing both literal and figurative way of starting to clear the clutter from my life.

I've spent time meditating and praying that I can regain some balance and semblance of a normal, sane person...not that I really will ever be what they call sane but close. :) I've already made plans for getting some things off my list and spent time at the dog park...which is always cathartic... :)

For me...it's just making sure that Special K now doesn't want to run for the hills away from the crazy, insane, dog lady who just lost her marbles....but is trying to find them amongst all the dog hair that was just extracted from our apartment.

PS....I'm not as crazy as some but crazier than most.

busy....knittin.

So...I've been working away at my "homework" scarf for Saturday at Stitchworm. I've messed up the pattern(that I kind of made up and switched and really don't have) and I feel like the needles are too big for the yarn...but otherwise it's going great. :) I'm enjoying it....despite my boyfriend's comments on how could I possibly be knitting in FLORIDA!!! It's hot out and I'm knitting. I try to explain that my plans are to make some dishcloths and these cute curtains I saw and a bath mat for a new house but I think it's falling on deaf ears. I also think he's just a bit jealous of the time I'm spending knitting(or reading knitting blogs) and not having my full attention on him.

Pic of my "homework" knit a couple days ago...it's longer now. :)
I kind of feel bad for the poor guy because I've been SUPER stressed over our move next month and getting ready for the new school year. I'm a teacher and I have to get my classroom in order, lesson plans started, and on top of that...I'm the tech person and we just got a new software to install and teach people how to use BEFORE school starts. :) So, you can understand why sitting and knitting and keeping my mind occupied can really help my stress levels. I sat down today and wrote out a list of things to be done at school and home. I also got boxes to start boxing up stuff. Special K and I have plans to rearrange my tech lab on saturday and I feel MUCH better.

Today to help me relax before cleaning, I took the pups to the dog park and read some of my first knitting book...Yarn Harlot's Knitting Rules. Which I've really enjoyed and love her wit.

I also asked to be a part of knitting bloggers and purling puppies web ring, so a couple new folks other than my boyfriend, sisters, brother, maybe my dad, and my boyfriend's mom might actually read some of this. If you are new WELCOME...forgive me now for my insanity.

My homework.

Ricky at Stitchworm gave us homework of working on a scarf with whatever pattern we wanted. I started out three times and frogged two of them and then decided to just keep going. I'm learning and slowly getting better. So, here is a pic of what it's looking like so far. I've messed up my own made up pattern a couple times and I dropped a stitch or two but I think it looks great for my second real knitting piece ever. :) I've been knitting for a couple hundred rows so I just thought I got to the middle so now I'm going to purl the rest until I start the pattern again. That will give me some time to practice purling since I think I purl too tight. I'm working on size 10 1/2 needles on yarn that's for 8 but oh well. For now my homework is coming along great. I'll put up pics tomorrow. It's kind of late and I'm too lazy to upload pics right now.

Thanks.

Oh yeah. I went to Barnes and Noble today with Lil L while we were waiting for Nao and we looked at a bunch of knitting books. They were so much fun to read. I found that I really want Yarn Harlots Knitting Rules book. I think that will be my first Knitting read. We'll see. My fun purchases has to wait til friday. :) Lil L has gained some progress on her knitting too. :) She's working hard but seems to get distracted too. :)

Stitchworm!!!!

So...this morning I started my day at the dog park with the pups. They ran, played ball and had a great time. :) Here's a picture of us the other day at the grassy knoll by the water.
THEN!!!! As we were heading home I got a text from Fleas saying that her and Sammy would like to go with me to Stitchworm to learn how to knit.. YEAH!! So, we showed up and every one is so nice and they sat us down at the table and this nice woman Ricky showed us how to cast on and knit. Since I already knew how to she had me just work on my own and help Sammy a bit. Fleas and Sammy had a bit of trouble at first but then they slowly picked it up.

Fleas knitting.
Ricky and Sammy.
When they got going, Ricky started to show me how to purl...yes purl. I was excited. So..she had me cast on again and knit one row and purl a row and do the stockinette pattern. We continued to knit and purl as she showed Fleas and Sammy how to purl as well. While we were there Ricky also showed me how to bind off my first knitting project. ;)

My first piece...not sure what it is but hey it's knitted. :)
Me knitting.
Then when we were done Ricky showed us what kind of yarn to get... I did better with some help. :) Then they got some needles and we headed home. I couldn't even wait to get home to start and I started to try to find the center of my yarn and made a mess in the car so I had to start to wind it in a ball. :) The following pictures if of the yarn and needles we got. The pink is Sammy's, the blue is Fleas, and the maroon is mine. They got two sets of size 8 needles, one bamboo and one metal.

Our homework for next week is to make a scarf with any pattern of knit and purl rows we want. I wanted to blog here first but I'm off to start my new practice project. :)

My Quilt in Progress. QIP.

In May and early June I worked on this quilt. These are a bunch of old t-shirts from when I was in high school on one and then the other is my college years. I interfaced the t-shirts and have sewn the front of both quilts together. I still have to do the border around it and the back. I also have pillow cases that I'm making to match. :) I'll show those pictures as they get finished. :)

High School Quilt

College Quilt

Just as a note. I originally wanted these to be one quilt but then realized that they wouldn't line up because it's my first one and was really hard to measure perfectly. Hence now they are two quilts. :)

Stitchworm

I found a local yarn store that guess what....has a free instructor there from 10am to 1pm on wed and sat. I haven't had time with my busy week to frequent any of the local yarn shops and was planning on it next week but with a free instructor there, I'll be there tomorrow...which happens to be saturday. YEAH!!!

She/he can hopefully help me with my stitches which I feel are too lose in some places and too tight in others. I'll take a picture of my pre-instruction piece I'm working on right now for reference for my later years. :)

(that may be my 3rd post today on this blog if I put a pic up) hehehehe

I emailed my sister's to see if anyone wants to join me. I asked my niece, Sammy, who showed interest last night but we'll see. I hope she joins in the fun.. :)

Shooting Range...

Ok..so yes two post in one day but whatever. :) So, Special K likes guns and likes to shoot them. His boss C and his wife S also likes to shoot guns. We hang out with them every once in a while and they've actually invited us to go to the shooting range with them..well, more times that I can remember. I've never shot a gun and to be honest I'm kind of scared to. I've mananged to avoid it by saying things from "no" to "we already have plans." Well...now about two weeks ago the plan was made for us to go tonight. Yes, I still don't want to go but for Special K I'm going to brave it and go with him. I have to try at least once anyway. I'm not sure what I'll be shooting with...even though I saw several of C and S's collection on Monday night at dinner. I only held one and I wasn't all that comfortable with it.

I'll let you know how it goes later. I like peace and creativity....not really into war or guns. I do like men who like guns, hunting, and manly stuff though. :) hmmm.

My first knit!!

Ok...so I ventured into Michael's on my way home last night. I didn't have much time because I wanted to spend at least 15 minutes chilling with Special K before I had to babysit but I had to, just had to stop and buy needles and yarn.

So...I've been reading and wanting to learn for how long now...two months secretly. :) I get to the store and there are millions of different choices of yarn and I get a little over whelmed. I had read that I needed to get worsted weight yarn in a solid color to start and size 8, 9, or 10 needles. I started looking and with no help in sight I grabbed the size 10 1/2 Bamboo needles and then moved on to yarn. My first stop was the bargain bin and I found some Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in cool colors for only $1.99...of course not solid...the thoughts of solid color and worsted yarn quickly leaving my brain. I find two different ones I like that are for a size 10 needle. I am pleased with myself but I look around at the other ones but I had already sold myself on the two I had. Oh well...so I get home and then remember...what was I thinking. I'm learning to knit and should follow directions but oh well. I have the yarn now and I WANT to learn now. :) I don't have time to return the yarn and get what I needed. :) oh well.

This is what I got.(not the best lighting but oh well)

So, I spend about 30 minutes talking and showing off my purchase to Special K, who for the record could care less about what I got but was semi-interested because I was excited. Then off I went to babysit while he returned to work. As I got to babysitting with my new purchases with me, I start talking to my landlord and we get to the part where I'm starting to learn to knit...and guess what. The oldest of the girls I sit for, we'll call her Lil L, she happened to tell her mom the other day that she wanted to start learning to knit.. Yeah!!! a person to knit with!!! It's especially cool because I babysit often and hence we can knit together. First step need to learn to cast on and actually knit before I can show her how. :) She finds her stuff, the parental units head out for dinner, and I plop down in front of the computer and watch some tutorials(not for long and I still kept an eye on the girls). Within 15 minutes I catch on to casting on continental style and knitting english(I didn't get the continental and last time I learned knitting it was english) So..then I cook dinner and we eat burgers and cherries(healthy and a great combination).

And so we knit!! So I show Lil L how to cast on and send her on her way to practice. I on the other hand, have cast on and knit a few rows, frogged the whole thing and started over about 10 times at this point. :) I attempt to actually continue to knit but I kept missing a stitch so I'd just frog and start again. I'm at the point where I've stopped frogging it just to let you know. :)

So...the yarn finish. I've decided to make two scarves out of the yarn I got and practice just knitting one all the way and the other one purl it the whole way. Then next week when I'm sitting again, I plan on taking Lil L out to the cool yarn shops I found and don't have time to visit yet and get a skein of yarn that is nice and pretty and worsted. :)

I've very excited to start my knitting!! I haven't decided yet whether to start a knitting blog or not. I don't want knitting to take this blog over but I'm not sure I'm at the knitting blog stage yet. I'll keep you posted. :)

Knitting a new.

So...I've decided to start a new blog about knitting. Hence you found me here. :) I'm going to repost some post from gnat's world just to catch my knitting blog up. Hope you enjoy.

This week....

This week has been CRAZY. First off I'm not used to working full 8 hours a day and then add a 40 minute commute to and from work and you got a frazzled, tired gnat.

Last night was pretty bad because I had taken on a tech task for the Parent Association at school. It was due this morning so last night was the time to do it. I got off work at around 5 and drove home, swinging by to pick up the last of the task and headed home. Was starving so I quickly walked the dogs, made scrambled eggs and toast for dinner. Worked on task. Went over and finished task at Fleas and then got home at almost 9pm. Special K was glad to see me home but when I ran down and got the laundry and proceeded to fold them while he was doing dishes, changed and climbed in bed exhausted he was a tad upset. We ended up staying up and talking instead of what I had wanted to do....SLEEP.

This morning was our running morning but as we woke up at 5:15 we both agreed we needed sleep. :) But promised tomorrow would be a running day.

Ok....so my job...it's boring and they don't really have much for me to do so I've been uber reading blogs(mostly knitting blogs because I'm OBSESSED) and yup you guessed it. Sneakily knitting behind my desk. :) I've gotten caught once but all that was said was "knit one, purl two" Can't beat that. :)

I've also decided to make a knitting blog. :) You knew it would happen. I can't help it. It's Bark n Knit. I haven't posted anything as of right now but I'm probably going to repost that post on here from yesterday. It would be a good start. :) I hope none of my three readers are disappointed that I'm making another blog...I actually deleted abb's training diary for this one...so I'll keep up with both. :) Enjoy. Hey just think if you don't really want to hear about my knitting you don't have to read that one. :)

Michael's craft store here I COME!!!!!!!

Just talked to Special K and due to our run this morning and the great quality time with me of course, he's in a GREAT MOOD!!! Special K has agreed to allow me to buy 1 set of knitting needles and 2 skiens of inexpensive yarn!!! GO ME!!!! I'm so excited I've already planned on hitting up Michael's on my way home.

He's even agreed to wake up early with me on the days we don't run and go on the long walk with the dogs. We've agreed it was really nice spending quality time together in the morning. It's usually a sleep/grumpy kiss good bye and a "call you later." It was nice to chat while we ran and not have to wait all day before we get to spend any time together. :)

Steps in a good direction.

It has become a full blown obsession....

I WANT TO LEARN TO KNIT!!! I can't stop reading and finding new knitting blogs to read about knitting which I can't start to learn yet. I have found patterns that I want to make, needles and yarn to buy. Arg!! I guess sitting at a temp job with not much to do but typing every once in a while has just about made this worse. :) I feel that I just need to knit. I can't explain it and yes I already know I'm crazy so you don't have to remind me but I just get obsessed with things. It's the way I've always been...I need to be doing something or researching something or just generally moving forward with things. :)

My two latest passions(sounds better than obsessions) are:

1. getting back in shape
2. learning to knit.

I've started the getting back in shape. After our softball game last night which was won in extra innings, I grabbed the dogs and went for a run/walk for about 30 minutes. I was pretty proud of myself at that alone but wait it gets better. When I was home stretching, Special K casually said that if I can get him out of bed in the mornings he will run/walk with me before work. I quickly agreed to three days a week and a bike ride during the weekend. Then at a little before 6am this morning ,I got up and dragged grumpy out for our run. It was easier that I thought to get him out of bed but let's see if that continues. Our only prob so far is that I walk to fast and he runs too fast...we agreed on a comprimise! We ran/walked for about 30 minutes then he jumped in the shower and I walked the dogs. After the shower he did make me breakfast in exchange for walking the dogs so I was happy. :) I took a shower too just for the record.

So...now the knitting part...I don't have needles or yarn and I agreed to not buy needles until I finish my quilt(which is on hold until Aug when I start house sitting for my landlords again, big house=lots of room to spread sewing stuff). So here I wait and read blogs about knitting that I can not do and just obsess that I can't get needles or yarn until late Aug when I'm back at school and have less time. While in August, we will be getting ready to move to a new house and will be spending most our free time packing. Oh well.

Just for reference on my previous passions as of late....My last two were making my t-shirt quilt and learning to play the guitar. T-shirt quilt is on hold until August but will be DONE!! I'll upload pictures of the work in progress. Both fronts of quilt look really cool!!! and learning to play the guitar is a slow process when you are teaching yourself but I'm still working on it.

Off to read more knitting blogs. :)

Knitting, Quilting, distractions.

So, I have been thinking I wanted to start learning to knit again. I read this blog Crazy Aunt Purl and she knits and talks about it all the time and I get excited every time she does. I tried a while ago and got it down but never really finished anything...especially since I've moved to Florida and well it's hot here. :) IE knitting scarfs and hats doesn't really make much sense. :)

If you ask Special K I just get distracted really easily so that's probably why I never finished. I'm not lazy....just easily distracted. :)

My summer project right now are the two t-shirt quilts and four pillows waiting to be sewn. I've sewn the front sides of both quilts...the parts with all the t-shirts. The material and sewing stuff is pretty much taking up every possible flat surface of our living room including the top of Abigail's crate.

I worked diligently when we were house sitting for our landlords. I took over their dining room and kitchen. I had space and when it comes to cutting tons of fabric and sewing you need that. For those of you who don't know...our living room is the size of a big walk-in closet. :) Not much room to set up a sewing machine. I still need to cut out the back parts of the quilts and the pillow material. I have everything I need but space. I tried the other day and spread material all over the floor in the living room...and well with two big dogs who like to be right under foot...or on top of said material...it got difficult to continue. We are house/pet sitting for our landlords in August for 10 days and I've pretty much resigned to waiting to complete the quilts and pillows til then. My sister G said she would help when the time came...as long as she and her family can swim in their pool. :)

So...for now what do I do. I already spend so much time in front of my computer with work and such. I read enough to drive Special K crazy. (Last night I got a "Could you get your head out of the book and come here") I haven't been inspired to pick up a paint brush or charcoal in I don't know how long...again that takes space. Knitting seems perfect.

Last problem is...I am on a budget because we are moving into a bigger house in Sept and I've already spent my summer craft budget on my quilt and sewing stuff. I guess I can pull out my old knitting needles...and the unfinished yarn. :) Now is the time to learn how to knit. When my budget allows I guess I can go purchase new yarn and some new needles because that may help. :) I might go see if any of my sister's, who crochet would let me have some of their old yarn for learning purposes as well.

Wish me luck in my crazy new idea...which I'm sure I'll hear a few choice words about. :)

My trip to Tiny T-town.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of joining Special K on a trip to his home town...Toronto, Ohio...The Gem City.(they have a McDonald's, which is the cleanest one I think I've ever seen) We flew out friday afternoon and I must say I was pretty excited to visit his hometown and meet his mom. We got in a 6pm and much to our disappointment we weren't able to go to the Cubs vs Pirates game (long story) but oh well... His sister picked us up and within two minutes were bickering like they hadn't been away from each other for the last couple months. I enjoyed the ride home and listened to the constant banter. We stopped by his aunt Jojo's house to pick up a car and then headed to his home for 22 years. We arrived and his mom ran out and leaped onto him. She was very happy he was home. We stayed with his sister so we went in and I met his nephew Logan. He's a very cool kid and liked to call me Aunt Madalie....once it was Uncle Madalie...but that's ok. He's only 2.

We had Chinese take out for dinner and then went out to meet some of his buddies. We stopped and chatted for a bit with his friend Shawn, or Cane or whatever else Special K calls him. I don't think I understood more than two words that came out of Shawn's mouth but Special K was able to catch every word. I mostly didn't know the people he talked about so it was hard to follow.

Our next stop was his friend Steve's. We stayed there pretty much the rest of the night. At first it was Steve, Special K, and I but it quickly became a crowd. :) We played a game I had almost forgotten but remembered like it was yesterday. Moosehead...this is a drinking game using a quarter and an ice tray. My friends called it Moose. :) It was fun and I drank more that night than I had in a long time but I was good.(stay away from the robitussin jello shots) We skipped going to the Margaret's Bar(he wasn't sure he could get in due to happenings at Christmas time) because we were tired and headed home to sleep on a tiny and I mean tiny twin bed.

Saturday started with Special K making a great breakfast and then he took me on a driving tour of T-town with his mom. The tour lasted about 15 minutes to span the town but I got to see lots of places that Special K knew like the back of his hand. After our tour, Special K needed to go get measured for a tux for a wedding he's in in August. We then picked up his brother and headed to meet his Grandparent's. Big K's parents were really nice. There house was warm and welcoming and Special K recounted his favorite times in the house. On separate occasions his grandparent's each asked if a wedding would be expected soon, since we are living together and renting a house soon.(they are old fashion but that's ok) But we just said we've talked about it and moved on. :) After several Let's go's from Special K's brother we left and headed back to his sis' to relax before the evenings events.

That night we went to an annual 4th of July party thrown by his buddy, Steve. It was fun times of drinking and socializing. I don't think I have ever seen Special K socialize as much as that night. He was with friends he's known pretty much his whole life and it was nice to see. His one comment for the night is every time he went off to pee or such I would disappear. :) I didn't mean to but I was a little tipsy. (I drank more that night than I had the previous night) and I hung out with the few that I was comfortable enough to start conversations with. :) We hung out as long as we could and after one round of flip cup for me headed home. We walked the 4 blocks back to his sister's house and passed out.

Sunday we hung out and relaxed around the house. His mom made us breakfast and it was wonderful. As we headed out it was sad to leave his mom so soon but it was nice to head back to our bed. We stopped by his grandparents house on the way to Pittsburgh airport and off we went back to our puppies and our tiny garage apartment.

It was very nice to see Special K's hometown. It explains a lot about him and it was wonderful to meet his mom and get along so well. I will definitely be excited to go back....just have to be ready for some drinking. I drank more this past weekend than I have since before Special K and I started dating. :)

The little things...

Sometimes it's the little things that a person you love does for you that mean more than they can imagine. Today started out as a normal day. I actually had a temp job today being the receptionist at the temp agency I am using. It's pretty much the only day this week that I'm working. :)

I got up and walked the dogs, made coffee and toast with jelly for breakfast, made my lunch, got ready for work, and headed out the door. Walked down to my car, fixed the seat because Special K was the last to drive it. Got settled in and turn the ignition...only to find that my car would not start. Yesterday I was on empty and we took my car to meet Special K's boss to go out on the boat. I had known we needed to stop and put gas in the car but on the way there we were running late and after the boat we just were tired and came home. We drove his truck around that night so I never thought about my lack of gas again...until 7:30am when I thankfully was heading to work early. So...I quickly called Special K at work and told him my car wouldn't start. He said without hesitation I'll be right there. A little more than 10 minutes later he picked me up and drove me to work. We got there on time and he kissed me good bye, said I love you and I'll pick you up at 5.

Now...this may not seem like much but to me it shows me how much we are a couple now and how much he loves me and is my partner in life. I've never been one to depend on people outside my family. I usually am there for my friends but don't call them for much. Special K is the first boyfriend that I've allowed myself to depend on. We have only been together a short while...will be 6 months next saturday but he means more to me than anything. We have our disagreements and we both have our moments of wanting to kill each other but in the end we always end our day on a positive note and an I love you.
